Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Essay -- Drug I

Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Abstract This casebook concentrates on the negative effects that the pharmaceutical industry’s trade and production policies have on third world nations suffering from disease epidemics. My position is that pharmaceutical companies are not concerned with the health benefits of their drugs, but rather with the market that their drugs generate. I illustrate this notion by describing the trade policies that pharmaceutical companies influence and the pharmaceutical companies’ production policies which concentrate on producing life-style drugs rather than drugs that cure life-threatening diseases. Multinational pharmaceutical giants are occupied with producing drugs that yield the most profits rather than with producing drugs to cure life-threatening diseases. Though many people in third world countries suffer from curable or treatable infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, many of them go without treatment because the vaccines that cure these diseases are either too expensive for them to afford or they are not produced in sufficient quantities. To illustrate the down-production of necessary life-sustaining drugs is the fact that â€Å"between 1975 and 1999, 1,393 new drugs were marketed, out of which only 16 were for neglected diseases that accounted for over 10% of the diseases in the World† (Mà ©decins Sans Frontià ¨res). Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ was born about 6 B. C. and was crucified about 29 A. D. He was the founder of Christianity. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a village in Palestine five miles (8km) south of Jerusalem. Palestine was under Roman domination with Herod the Great as its puppet ruler. There is no way of reckoning Jesus’ exact birth date. The Christian calendar, devised in the sixth century, places the Nativity in the year 1 A. D. Most calendars, however, believe that Herod died in 4 B. C. and that Jesus was born two or three years earlier. The nativity has been celebrated on December 25 since the fourth century A. D. Luke tells of the decree of Emperor Augustus that required everyone to go to his native village to be taxed. Mary and her husband Joseph had to go from their home in Nazareth, Galilee, to Bethlehem, Judea. Jesus was born in a stable because there was no room in the inn. A manger (a feeding trough for livestock) served as a crib. Luke reports that shepherds came to worship him, and Matthew tells of the wise men from the east, who saw a brilliant star in the sky and came to pay homage to him.Herod, alarmed by the birth of a child described by the wise men as â€Å"King of the Jews,† ordered the massacre of all young children in or near Bethlehem in an attempt to kill Jesus. Joseph and his family escaped by fleeting to Egypt. After Herod died Joseph took his family back to Nazareth. The parents were devout Jews. Jesus received careful religious instruction and spent much time in studying the Scriptures (Old Testament). His language was Aramaic, a Semitic tongue. Joseph was a carpenter, and Jesus probably learned the trade. Mark (6:3) reports that Jesus had four brother and these were James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon.

Holding Government Responsible for Pollution in China Essay

In the process of industrialization, China has become one of the most polluted countries in the world. Statistics show that in the past five years, cases of asthma have been risen by 40%, because of air pollution issues in China. Government supported projects and multinational corporations are both contributing to the pollution in China. The Chinese government is aware of the environment issues, such as air pollution, water contamination and soil erosion, however, the authorities see the environmental degradation as part of a tradeoff for economic prosperity. Yet, Chinese government still called it a clean energy resource. In the documentary â€Å"Up The Yangtze†, a peasant, who was forced to leave his home because of the rising water level, said that the program is beneficial to the country but not the individuals. Chinese government is aware of the consequence that the Three Gorges Dam could bring from the beginning, however, in order to supply the rapid development in China, the environment is not the priority at all. Since Chinese government sees economic development as priority, they provided opportunities for them. However, the one thing that the government forgets is how catastrophic these programs could be to the environment of China. In order to attract the MNCs and companies, the Chinese government allows them to do whatever they want. Most factories would choose to use toxic substance and dispose the waste improperly just to maxima the profits. The government officials know that the f actories are polluting the environment, however, mostly they would ignore those factories.
